Living With Alzheimer’s: when the disease changes shape
Healthcare · Psychiatry & Neurology · ES / IT
Alzheimer’s is rarely a single experience. For many patients, the disease reaches a point where behavioural symptoms - agitation, psychosis, sudden personality shifts; it become as demanding as the cognitive decline itself.
For the professionals treating them, and the families caring for them, this phase represents one of the most complex and emotionally charged moments in the entire care pathway.
This study explored that terrain from multiple perspectives, conducting in-depth interviews with psychiatrists, neurologists, and primary caregivers across Spain and Italy. Hilo Research was in charge of the two markets with distinct clinical cultures and different support structures for dementia care.
The research mapped how specialists conceptualise and manage behavioural symptoms, the gap between clinical protocol and lived reality, and the profound emotional weight carried by those closest to the patient.
